COVID-19 | The Health Ministry today reported 19,378 new Covid-19 cases.
The Klang Valley continues to report less new cases than Sabah and Sarawak for a third day in a row, possibly signalling a shift in the Covid-19 epicentre.
The R-naught for Malaysia is continuing on a month-long downward trend and was 0.97 last night. A R-naught of less than 1.00 suggests that the spread of Covid-19 was slowing down.

Kelantan has hit a new record high with 1,479 cases while Sabah, Sarawak and Johor all have over 2,000 cases. Penang and Kedah are also not far from that number.
When adjusted for population size, however, Penang has taken the lead with a daily average of 94.58 community cases per 100,000 population in the past week, followed by Kedah (84.24 per 100,000) and Selangor (77.95 per 100,000).
The incidence rate figures provided by the Health Ministry excludes imported cases and cases in detention facilities.

Overall, 15,371 (73.6 percent) of cases reported today involve unvaccinated or partly vaccinated individuals, while 5,526 (26.4 percent) are fully vaccinated.
For the record, 34.9 percent of Malaysia’s population are considered fully vaccinated today, based on the number of second doses administered two weeks ago on Aug 17. This means the disease is more prevalent in populations that are yet to be fully vaccinated.
As of yesterday, vaccine coverage has reached 45.6 percent of the national population, including children who are still vulnerable to the disease but not eligible for vaccination.

Covid-19 (Aug 26): Record 24,599 cases and 393 deaths
COVID-19 | The Health Ministry reported 24,599 new Covid-19 cases, a record high partly contributed by the worsening situation beyond the Klang Valley.
Three states hit record highs today, all outside the Klang Valley. They are Sabah, Penang and Johor.
Sabah reported 3,487 infections, the third day in a row where cases in the state were above 3,000.
Meanwhile, Johor broke 2,000 cases for the first time, hitting a record 2,785.
Penang also recorded the highest case number in the state with 2,078, the second time where fresh infections surpassed 2,000 there.
- Active cases: 265,841
- Patients in ICUs: 990
- Intubated: 487
A total of 160,196 people have undergone Covid-19 testing in the 24 hours up to noon today, yielding an unofficial test positivity rate of 15.36 percent. The average for the past 14 days was 14.06 percent.
The high number suggests a significant degree of under-testing, so the actual number of cases is likely much higher than what was reported.
The test positivity rate has exceeded 10 percent for 37 consecutive days.
Deaths
A record high of 393 deaths was recorded today, surpassing the previous record of 360 on Aug 8.
This brings the death toll to 15,211 people.
For context, the average number of medically certified deaths due to all causes in 2019 was 299 per day. Today is the second time this benchmark has been exceeded by Covid-19 deaths alone.
[Note: Non-medically certified deaths (mostly deaths due to old age) accounts for another 176.9 deaths per day to the pre-pandemic death statistics.]
Most of the new deaths were reported in Selangor (125), followed by Kuala Lumpur (61), Johor (48), Malacca (33; new record), Penang (31; new record), Sabah (26), Negeri Sembilan (20), Kedah (15), Perak (15), Kelantan (9), Pahang (8), and Terengganu (2).
They include 65 people with no history of chronic illness.
One hundred of the deceased had died before being brought to a hospital, mostly in Kuala Lumpur (35), Selangor (23) and Negeri Sembilan (11).
