Covid-19 (Aug 25): 22.6k new cases, 4 non-Klang Valley states hit record highs
COVID-19 | The Health Ministry reported 22,642 new cases of Covid-19 today.
Four states – Kedah, Johor, Perak, and Kelantan reported record highs.
Sabah is reporting more than 3,000 cases for the second day in a row.
Meanwhile, Selangor is also experiencing a resurgence in cases, after cases dipped below 6,000 for three days.
Overall, nine states and territories reported four-digit cases today.
Meanwhile, a total of 171,327 people had been sample for Covid-19 in the 24 hours up to noon today. This yields an unofficial test positivity rate of 13.22 percent.
For context, the average test positivity rate for the last 14 days including today is 13.86 percent.
The test positivity rate has exceeded 10 percent for 36 consecutive days, which suggest a persistently high degree of under-testing and the actual number of Covid-19 cases is likely significantly higher than the reported figures.
- Active cases: 264,292
- Patients in ICUs: 1,003
- Intubated: 490
Despite these setbacks, both ICU and ventilator usage are on a one-month low.
The last time the number of ICU patients were lower than today’s figures was on July 25 with 970 cases, while ventilator use was 468 on July 24.
The numbers are for confirmed Covid-19 cases only and do not include ‘probable’ cases that were still pending confirmation on the reporting date.
Deaths
A total of 265 Covid-19 fatalities have been reported today, bringing the total death toll to 14,818. This includes 66 today who have no history of chronic illness.
Selangor is back on top of the list with 105 deaths reported today, followed by Johor (39), Sabah (23), Kedah (19), Penang (18), Kuala Lumpur (18), Negeri Sembilan (12), Perak (9), Sarawak (6), Pahang (5), Kelantan (5), Malacca (4), Terengganu (2).

Covid-19 (Aug 23): 17,672 new cases, Klang Valley case count easing down
COVID-19 | The Health Ministry today reported 17,672 new Covid-19 cases.
Selangor (4,316) reported new cases below the 5,000 mark for the first time in 35 days.
The number of people in quarantine centres in Selangor has also steadily dropping over the past week as was the number of people hospitalised for Covid-19. Selangor’s ICU bed use, however, is holding steady over the past week.
Overall, new case numbers in the Klang Valley – where 66.7 percent of the adult population (2010 census numbers) have been fully vaccinated – has been steadily dropping since Aug 6.
While this augurs well for the most populated part of the country, other regions where the vaccination rate is not as high are seeing an uptrend in case counts and hospitalisations.

Covid-19 (Aug 17): 19.6k cases, respite in Klang Valley, 293 deaths
Covid-19 | The Health Ministry reported 19,631 new cases of Covid-19 as of noon today.
Based on a seven-day average of new daily cases, the case count is on a eight-day continous downtrend in the Klang Valley.
Active cases are on a 53 day uptrend breaching the quarter-million mark today while Covid-19 deaths have breached the 13,000 mark.
The number of patients requiring intensive care and those who are intubated are generally holding steady over the past month.
As of noon today, 149,750 samples were collected. The unofficial positivity rate is 13.11 percent. This figure has been in double digits for 28 days straight.
- Active cases: 252,147
- Patients in ICU: 1,054
- Intubated: 525
States
Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Negeri Sembilan all recorded a R-naught of less than 1.00 as of last night. A R-naught of less than 1.00 suggests that the spread of Covid-19 in these areas were decelerating. These three regions have relatively high rates of vaccination.
The R-naught is highest in Perlis (1.25), Sarawak (1.23) and Kelantan (1.19).
The uptrend in the spread of Covid-19 in Sarawak is noteworthy as official government data suggests that 79 percent of the population are fully vaccinated.
However, Health Ministry data, as of Aug 14, suggests that non-critical Covid-19 bed usage in Sarawak is only 39.04 percent while it is mostly near capacity in other regions. ICU bed-use is (55 percent) also relatively lower than other regions.
Six other states, meanwhile, are reporting four digit cases.
Deaths
There were 293 new Covid-19 deaths reported today that were attributed to Covid-19. The national death toll has reached 13,077.
There were 44 victims who were pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.
Selangor (90) reported the highest number of deaths followed by Kuala Lumpur (47), Johor (42), Pahang (21), Malacca (19), Perak (19), Sabah (15), Negeri Sembilan (9), Kedah (9), Penang (8), Kelantan (7), Terengganu (5) and Sarawak (2).
Clusters
The Health Ministry is currently monitoring 1,360 active Covid-19 clusters.
Another 39 new clusters were classified today, of which 23 involved workplaces.

COVID-19 | Malaysia has reported 19,740 new Covid-19 cases today, with record highs in Sarawak and Malacca.
Key figures:
- Active cases: 249,277
- Patients in ICU: 1,047
- Intubated: 520
Active cases are continuing on a 53-day ongoing climb while the number of patients needing intensive care or ventilators have remained mostly unchanged for the past three weeks.
However, the number of daily deaths have been trending upwards over the same period. [See chart below].
States
- Selangor (5,706)
- Sabah (1,728)
- Kedah (1,592)
- Sarawak (1,566)
- Johor (1,510)
- Kuala Lumpur (1,360)
- Penang (1,251)
- Kelantan (1,227)
- Malacca (1,120)
- Perak (938)
- Terengganu (688)
- Pahang (646)
- Negeri Sembilan (343)
- Putrajaya (43)
- Perlis (20)
- Labuan (2)
Health Ministry data showed that 36 percent (7,109) of cases were located in the Klang Valley, while most cases were reported outside the region.
In Malacca, the state recorded 1,120 cases today – the first time it has reported cases in the thousands.
Sarawak, meanwhile, reported 1,566 cases.
Overall, nine states and territories have reported four-digit case numbers today including Kuala Lumpur and Selangor.
As of last night, the R-naught for the country was at 1.05. An R-naught of more than 1.00 suggests that the spread of Covid-19 was accelerating.
On a positive note, the R-naught for Kuala Lumpur is now below 1.00 for the first time in months. The Kuala Lumpur region has a high vaccination rate.
The other two regions with an R-naught of below 1.00 are Labuan and Putrajaya – two other areas also with high vaccination rates.
Deaths
Another 274 deaths attributed to Covid-19 were reported today, bringing the national death toll to 12,874.
