Covid-19 deaths (Sept 17): 346 reported fatalities as backlog clearing continues

Categories:

COVID-19 | The Health Ministry’s Github data repository reported a total of 346 Covid-19 fatalities yesterday (Sept 16), bringing the cumulative death toll to 22,355.

From the newly reported deaths yesterday, 30.35 percent or 105 died before they could receive treatment at a hospital.

Out of the 346 reported deaths, 179 happened in the last seven days, of which only one was from yesterday.

Another 165 of the reported deaths yesterday were older than a week due to backlog.

An average of 309 Covid-19 deaths were reported daily in the last 30 days. The seven-day reported average is 410.

Selangor recorded the highest number of new deaths at 94, which is 27.17 percent of the newly reported fatalities.

Other states with a significant number of newly reported deaths include Kedah (82).

The remaining deaths were in Johor (59), Sabah (47), Penang (30), Sarawak (14), Malacca (4), Terengganu (4), Kelantan (3), Perak (3), Perlis (3) and Kuala Lumpur (3).

No new deaths were reported in Negeri Sembilan, Pahang, Labuan and Putrajaya.

As of yesterday, there were 227,120 active Covid-19 cases. This is a reduction of 6.46 percent compared to the 242,805 active infections a week ago.

Previously, the Health Ministry released death statistics together with the number of new Covid-19 cases in the evening. This has since changed.

Deaths statistics are now released the next day by 2am. Malaysiakini reports them in the morning.

Covid-19 (Sept 17): 17,577 new cases, record in Perak

Categories:

COVID-19 | The Health Ministry today reported 17,577 new Covid-19 cases.

The number of new daily cases in Perak (1,596) was a record high while hospitalisation rates for the past two weeks had remained relatively stable.

Sarawak (3,480) still has the highest daily case count for the past three days and hospitalisations are trending up.

However, the number of deaths in Sarawak are still among the lowest in the country over the past 14 days as the state has an above average vaccination rate.

On seven-day average basis, Sarawak has the higher number of new cases per 100,000 people (127.64 new cases per 100,000 people) followed by Penang (86.29) and Perak (68.24).

As of last night, the r-naught for the country is 0.98. It has been below 1.00 since Sept 1. A R-naught of less than 1.00 suggests that the spread of Covid-19 is slowly down.

However, the R-naught is above 1.00 in Sarawak (1.11), Perak (1.04), Terengganu (1.04), Perlis (1.03), Pahang (1.02), Johor (1.01) and Penang (1.01).

The number of Covid-19 patients who require intensive care is slowly easing nationwide.

The number of active cases and latest data on Covid-19 deaths will only be made available around midnight tonight.

  • Patients in ICU: 1,223 [891 confirmed; 332 suspected]
  • Intubated: 720 [410 confirmed; 310 suspected]

Covid-19 (Sept 16): 18,815 new cases, Sarawak still highest

Categories:

COVID-19 | The Health Ministry today reported 18,815 new Covid-19 cases.

Sarawak has once again recorded the highest number of cases, though this only accounts for 19.5 percent of newly reported infections.

The runner-ups are Selangor (2,718) and Johor (2,206).

Figures of the latest Covid-19 death and active cases will be reported by the Health Ministry tonight. For yesterday’s figures, read this article.

As of yesterday, Covid-19 hospitalisations are still on the downtrend since a peak in mid-August, but the 12,254 patients still use up 71.4 percent of hospital beds allocated for Covid-19 treatment.

Likewise, the 1,280 patients in intensive care unit (ICU) wards occupy 80 percent of the capacity allocated for Covid-19 treatment.

States with utilisation rates at or above 80 percent (including non-Covid-19 beds) are Perlis (104.7 percent), Johor (94.8 percent), Penang (89.6 percent), Kedah (84.7 percent), Perak (83.1 percent), Terengganu (81.6 percent), and Malacca (80.0 percent).

In addition, according to the ministry’s CovidNow website, nine states and territories have ICU utilisation rates (including non-Covid-19 beds) above 80 percent. The national average is just below that at 79.6 percent.

These are Kedah (101.4 percent), Penang (96.6 percent), Johor (91.1 percent), Pahang (90 percent), Putrajaya (90 percent), Perak (89.6 percent), Selangor (83.8 percent) and Kuala Lumpur (81.5 percent).

The R-naught for the country as of yesterday is 0.97, marking the 15th consecutive day of the number staying below 1.00. An R-naught of less than 1.00 suggests that the spread of Covid-19 was slowing down.

The figure should be interpreted with caution, as the test positivity rate is still relatively high at 13.7 percent as of the latest available figures on Sunday. This suggests a lack of testing that could lead to case numbers being significantly underreported.

There are still six states where the R-naught is above 1.00, meaning the outbreak there is accelerating its pace.

These are Sarawak (1.14), Terengganu (1.08), Perlis (1.06), Perak (1.02), Johor (1.01), and Pahang (1.01).

Meanwhile, the R-naught in Penang and Kelantan is 1.00, which suggest the outbreak there is stable and neither growing nor shrinking.

Categories:

COVID-19 | The Health Ministry today reported 15,669 new cases as the Klang Valley reached a four-day high in fresh infections.

Sarawak recorded 118.55 new cases per 100,000 people, which is the highest, followed by Penang (99.28) and Perak (66.42) in third place by a wide margin.

While hospitalisation of Covid-19 patients in Sarawak is still trending up over the past two weeks, its death rate is among the lowest in the country at three deaths per 100,000 people over the same period, according to the CovidNow website.

Sarawak has the third-highest vaccination rate in the country.

As of yesterday, the R-naught was 0.98 for the whole country. An R-naught that is less than 1.00 suggests that the spread of Covid-19 was slowing down.

The only regions where the R-naught was less than 1.00 are Selangor, Sabah, Malacca, Kuala Lumpur, Labuan, Putrajaya, and Kedah.

Covid-19 (Sept 9): 19.3k cases, Perlis hits triple digits for first time

Categories:

COVID-19 | The Health Ministry reported 19,307 new cases of Covid-19 today.

Perlis (108) hit a new record, the first time cases have reached three digits.

The number of new cases in Sarawak is still above 3,000.

Overall, eight states had four-digit cases.

Hospital bed use is mostly decreasing, but Kelantan is bucking the trend. Over 1,000 Covid-19 patients are in hospital in the state after 152 were admitted yesterday.

The state’s hospital bed capacity is now at 111.2 percent, according to Health Ministry data, the highest in the country.

  • Active cases: 242,802
  • Patients in ICU: 1,310 (967 confirmed cases; 343 probable)
  • Intubated: 737 (464 confirmed cases; 323 probable)

Deaths

A total of 323 Covid-19 deaths have been reported today, bringing the total death toll 19,486. This includes 74 who have no history of chronic illness.

The deaths have been reported in Selangor (76), Johor (49), Penang (47), Kedah (44), Kuala Lumpur (22), Sabah (22), Malacca (17), Kelantan (11), Negeri Sembilan (10), Sarawak (9), Perak (5), Terengganu (5), Pahang (4) and Perlis (2).

Fifty-five of the deceased had died before they were brought to a hospital.

At a press conference today, however, Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin highlighted the disparity between the actual time of Covid-19 deaths in the Klang Valley and when those deaths are verified and added to the national statistics.

A chart shows that actual Covid-19 deaths in Selangor have been plummeting even as the state reported record-high cases in recent weeks.

As such, the minister said the reporting mechanism would be changed to better reflect the real-time situation

Categories:

Covid-19 (Sept 6): 17,352 new cases, easing in Klang Valley, but not in S’wak

Categories:

COVID-19 | The Health Ministry today reported 17,352 new Covid-19 cases.

The Klang Valley’s combined daily case count has gone down to levels not seen since late June and today it is half of the daily case count reported in East Malaysia.

Sarawak, with a vaccination rate that rivals the Klang Valley, is seeing a continued uptrend in new cases and hospitalisation. [see chart below]

There were 268 out of 17,352 new cases in Category 4 or 5 (require supplementary oxygen). Of this group, 28.7 percent are fully vaccinated.

As of yesterday, the R-naught has dropped to 0.95, down from 1.04 a month ago. An R-naught of less than 1.00 suggests that the spread of Covid-19 is decelerating.

However, there are places where the R-naught is above 1.00 – Sarawak, Perlis, Johor, Terengganu, Penang, Perak, Kelantan and Sabah.

Active Covid-19 cases are on an eight-day downward trend, while the number of patients requiring intensive care is trending down slowly as well.

  • Active cases: 252,668
  • Patients in ICUs: 1,355
  • Intubated: 745

New cases by state:

Sarawak – 3,714
Selangor – 2,126
Sabah – 1,844
Johor – 2,101
Kedah – 1,599
Penang – 1,558
Kelantan – 1,213
Perak – 1,082 Terengganu – 700
Pahang – 463

Malacca – 295
Negri Sembilan – 193
Perlis – 38
Putrajaya – 23

Categories:

COVID-19 | The Health Ministry today reported 18,547 new Covid-19 cases.

For the second day in a row, Sarawak (3,200, 63.6 percent of population fully vaccinated) has reported more cases than the entire Klang Valley combined.

Based on data shared by Sarawak minister for Local Government and Housing Dr Sim Kui Hian today, most of the new cases (99.75) percent are in Category 1 or 2 (no symptoms or mild symptoms).

  • Active cases: 252,002
  • Patients in ICU: 1,318 (977 confirmed; 341 probable)
  • Intubated: 735 (447 confirmed; 288 probable)

While hospitalisation of Covid-19 patients in the Klang Valley is trending down, the opposite is true for Sarawak and regions with lower vaccination rates such as Johor, Sabah and Penang [see chart below].

Sarawak (3,200)
Selangor (2,407)
Johor (2,174)
