Covid-19 (Sept 2): 20,988 new cases, East M’sia logs more cases than Klang Valley

Categories:

COVID-19 | The Health Ministry today reported 20,988 new Covid-19 cases today.

Sarawak and Sabah collectively reported more cases than the entire Klang Valley.

While Sarawak and Klang Valley have a full vaccination rate of more than 60 percent, Sabah’s rate is only 28.8 percent.

Sabah’s hospitalisation rate for Covid-19 has been steadily rising over the past two months while there has been a recent spike in hospitalisations for Sarawak. [See chart below]、

Record numbers were also reported in Kedah (2,455), Sarawak (2,992) and Terengganu (987).

On a more positive note, the R-naught for the country has reached 0.99 as of yesterday. A R-naught of less than 1.00 suggests that the spread of Covid-19 was slowing down.

The regions of Selangor, Putrajaya, Malacca, Kuala Lumpur, Negeri Sembilan and Labuan all recorded a R-naught of less than 1.00.

At the time of writing, Covid-19 sampling data had not been released. For a seven-day average, please refer to table below.

The number of active cases and patients requiring intensive care have been holding relatively steady for the past week.

  • Active cases: 262,540
  • Patients in ICU*: 1,001
  • Intubated*: 783

[*Confirmed Covid-19 positive patients only]

Covid-19 (Sept 1): 18.7k new cases, Kelantan hits another record

Categories:
  • UPDATED Sept 2 | Added state-level data on Covid-19 deaths following its release this morning.

COVID-19 | The Health Ministry reported 18,762 new cases of Covid-19 today as the situation in Kelantan – which has the second-lowest vaccination rate in the country – looks increasingly dire.

The Klang Valley continues to show signs of a downtrend with its total number of daily cases below that of the East Malaysian territories which are increasing of late.

However, it should be noted that Sabah (lowest vaccination rate) and Sarawak (fourth highest) are moving in different trajectories in terms of hospitalisation.

  • Active cases: 265,274
  • Patients in ICUs: 1,007
  • Intubated: 464

Deaths

A total of 278 Covid-19 fatalities have been reported today, bringing the total death toll to 16,942.

The deaths are reported in Selangor (110), Sabah (38), Johor (37), Kedah (22), Perak (18), Penang (13), Malacca (9), Kuala Lumpur (9), Sarawak (7), Kelantan (4), Negeri Sembilan (3), Pahang (3), Terengganu (3), and Perlis (2).

Of the new deaths, 65 of the deceased had died before being brought to a hospital. Most of them occurred in Selangor (37), Sabah (17) and Perak (4).

New cases by states

Selangor (3,711)
Sabah (2,430)
Sarawak (2,414)
Johor (1,993)
Penang (1,762)
Kedah (1,585)
Kelantan (1,504)
Perak (899)
Pahang (715)
Kuala Lumpur (573)
Terengganu (506)
Malacca (309)
Negeri Sembilan (291)
Putrajaya (34)
Perlis (33)
Labuan (3)

Based on data released by the Health Ministry, many states and territories have high Covid-19 test positivity rates as of the latest available data on Aug 2.

This suggests there is significant underreporting in these places and the actual number of cases is likely significantly higher, particularly where the test positivity rate exceeds 10 percent.

Clusters

A total of 1,494 out of 4,773 clusters are still active. This includes the 42 new clusters reported today.

Overall these clusters contributed 1,708 (9.1 percent) of today’s cases.

Of the new clusters, 22 are classified as workplace clusters while 17 are community clusters.

Religious events, educational facilities, and detention facilities have each been linked to a new cluster too.
