Covid-19 (Sept 2): 20,988 new cases, East M’sia logs more cases than Klang Valley
COVID-19 | The Health Ministry today reported 20,988 new Covid-19 cases today.
Sarawak and Sabah collectively reported more cases than the entire Klang Valley.
While Sarawak and Klang Valley have a full vaccination rate of more than 60 percent, Sabah’s rate is only 28.8 percent.
Sabah’s hospitalisation rate for Covid-19 has been steadily rising over the past two months while there has been a recent spike in hospitalisations for Sarawak. [See chart below]、
Record numbers were also reported in Kedah (2,455), Sarawak (2,992) and Terengganu (987).
On a more positive note, the R-naught for the country has reached 0.99 as of yesterday. A R-naught of less than 1.00 suggests that the spread of Covid-19 was slowing down.
The regions of Selangor, Putrajaya, Malacca, Kuala Lumpur, Negeri Sembilan and Labuan all recorded a R-naught of less than 1.00.
At the time of writing, Covid-19 sampling data had not been released. For a seven-day average, please refer to table below.

- Active cases: 262,540
- Patients in ICU*: 1,001

- UPDATED Sept 2 | Added state-level data on Covid-19 deaths following its release this morning.
COVID-19 | The Health Ministry reported 18,762 new cases of Covid-19 today as the situation in Kelantan – which has the second-lowest vaccination rate in the country – looks increasingly dire.
The Klang Valley continues to show signs of a downtrend with its total number of daily cases below that of the East Malaysian territories which are increasing of late.
However, it should be noted that Sabah (lowest vaccination rate) and Sarawak (fourth highest) are moving in different trajectories in terms of hospitalisation.
- Active cases: 265,274
- Patients in ICUs: 1,007
- Intubated: 464

Based on data released by the Health Ministry, many states and territories have high Covid-19 test positivity rates as of the latest available data on Aug 2.
This suggests there is significant underreporting in these places and the actual number of cases is likely significantly higher, particularly where the test positivity rate exceeds 10 percent.
