Covid-19 (April 4): 1,349 new cases, Sarawak tops the list

Today, the Health Ministry reported 1,349 new Covid-19 cases and two deaths.

Sarawak topped the list with 419 fresh infections, the second-highest on record for the state.

Only two other states recorded more than 100 new cases, namely Selangor and Penang with 343 and 185 fresh infections respectively.

The new infections comprised 73.24 percent Malaysians and 26.76 percent non-citizens.

The Klang Valley accounted for 32.1 percent (433 cases) of fresh infections while East Malaysia made up 37.73 percent (509 cases).

New infections also outpaced recoveries of 1,270, leading to an increase in active cases.

The intensive care units also added another 19 patients.

There were two new fatalities today, bringing the death toll to 1,288.

The new deaths were recorded in Sarawak and Sabah.

Those who died were aged between 76 and 78.

Clusters

A total of 359 out of 1,405 clusters are still active.

This includes the 10 new clusters reported today as well as another eight that were declared resolved.

Notably, three out of the ten new clusters involve education centres.

The resolved clusters are: Jalan Persiaran Cemerlang, Jalan Perindustrian Estate, Mayang, Jalan Senai Utama, Jalan Persiaran Teknologi Kulai, Tapak Bina Jalil Utama, Jalan Lombong and Jalan Ho Pin.

Covid-19 (April 3): 1,638 new cases, almost 500 in Perak

The Health Ministry today reported 1,638 new cases of Covid-19 and three deaths.

The new infections comprised 58 percent Malaysians and 42 percent non-citizens.

New infections also outpaced recoveries leading to a bump in active cases.

States

Perak reported 494 new cases, the highest in the country today.

According to the Health Ministry, the bulk of the new infections came from the Jalan Pelabuhan cluster which reported 486 out of the 487 cluster related cases from the state.

The cluster is linked to a factory in Manjung, with the first case reported on Feb 13. It has 1,312 cases in total of which 638 are still active.

Deaths

There were three fatalities today bringing the death toll to 1,286.

Kuala Lumpur, Sarawak, and Kelantan each reported one death.

Those who died were aged between 50 and 87.

Clusters

A total of 357 out of 1,395 clusters were still active.

This includes the seven clusters reported today as well as another 13 that were declared resolved.

The resolved clusters are Merotai Besar, Jengka Tujuh, Jalan Perindustrian Elektronik, Perindustrian Pelepas, Jalan Bukit Sentosa, Jalan Aman, Persiaran Kuala, Tapak Bina Muda, Jalan Mutiara Barat, Jalan Tanjung Empat, Industri 19, Lagoon Selatan and Tapak Bina Pantai Dalam.

Only one cluster – Jalan Pelabuhan – reported triple-digit new cases.

Covid-19 (April 2): 1,294 new cases, Pahang reaches 2-month high

The Health Ministry today reported 1,294 new Covid-19 cases amidst a marked increase in new cases in Pahang.

At the national level, the number of active cases is currently 1,4246. Figures have been holding steady since March 21. 

Malaysians made up 70.7 percent of new cases. 

The Klang Valley accounted for 42.35 percent (548 cases) of new cases while East Malaysia made up 21.95 percent (284 cases).

States 

There were four states – Selangor, Sarawak, Penang and Johor – which reported new cases in the three digits.

Of the 16 states and federal territories, there are eight jurisdictions that reported an R-naught number of more than 1.

These areas are Sabah, Penang, Kelantan, Malacca, Labuan, Putrajaya, Kedah and Pahang.

In Pahang, a single cluster – Jalan Putra Square – accounted for nearly half of the new cases. This cluster involved a factory in Kuantan. 

Deaths

The Health Ministry reported five more Covid-19 deaths, bringing the national death toll to 1,283.

The victims were reported in Sarawak (2), Sabah (1), Penang (1) and Johor (1).

The youngest victim – a Sabahan with comorbidity – was only 37.  Meanwhile, the body of a man, 57, was brought to the Balik Pulau hospital and found to have Covid-19.

The Health Ministry is currently monitoring 363 active clusters of which 10 were classified today.

The top three most active clusters were either linked to construction sites or factories and were not in the triple digits.

Of the 10 new clusters classified today, eight were detected only after the index case had reported symptoms.

There were three clusters that involved education institutions and one cluster involving a social event.

Covid-19 (April 1) – 1,178 new cases, five states record triple-digit numbers

The Health Ministry today reported 1,178 new Covid-19 cases, a return to normal levels after a steep rise yesterday.

Sarawak and Selangor recorded the highest number of new cases at 238 and 237 respectively.

Other areas that recorded three-digit cases include Penang, Johor and Kuala Lumpur.

The new cases put the cumulative infection figure to date at 346,678.

Malaysians made up the bulk of new cases (74.4 percent).

States

Close contacts of Covid-19 patients formed the majority (68 percent) of new cases in Sarawak, which has been reporting new cases in the low three digits since mid-February. 

Kuala Lumpur notably had 101 new cases, after nine days of reporting numbers in the double digits.

Deaths

There were six new Covid-19 deaths reported today, bringing the national death toll to 1,278.

These deaths were reported in Sarawak (2), Johor (1), Kelantan (1) and Sabah (1).

The victims were age between 54 and 81. Two victims were brought to the hospital dead.

The Health Ministry today reported that 362 clusters were still active of which 55 saw new cases.

The cluster with the most new cases is the Jelawat cluster involving which involved a factory in Penang, but the cluster has spread to Kedah and Perak.

Covid-19 (March 31) – 1,482 new cases, numbers creeping up in S’gor

The Health Ministry today reported 1,482 new Covid-19 cases nationwide with Selangor registering its highest number of new cases in eight days.

The number of new cases outpaced the number of people who were discharged today, pushing up the number of active Covid-19 cases to 14,604, an up from a low of 14,134 nine days ago. 

Active Covid-19 cases were steadily trending downwards until March 21 (see chart below).

Cases by states

Selangor was the worst-hit region today with 661 new cases. However, the majority of these new cases were linked to clusters (400 cases) and close contacts of Covid-19 positive patients (165).

Other regions with a high number of new cases were Penang (200), Sarawak (176) and Johor at (86).

Unlike other regions in the country, the majority of new cases in Penang over the past four days involved foreigners, indicative of new cases being detected through targeted screening of workplaces.

Apart from Penang, the other territories with an R-naught figure of more than one are Kelantan, Malacca, Kedah, Pahang and Sarawak. A figure of more than one suggests that the number of people infected with Covid-19 is growing.

Deaths

The Health Ministry reported seven new Covid-19 deaths today, bringing the national death toll to 1,272.

Five of the victims were Malaysians while the other two were foreigners. 

Four deaths occurred in Selangor while Johor, Sarawak and Sabah reported one death each.

Clusters

The Health Ministry today also reported that 370 Covid-19 clusters are still active throughout the country.

The most active cluster is the Tapak Bina Persiaran Cybersouth cluster (196 new cases) which was first classified on March 19.

This construction site cluster involves the Sepang district of Selangor where 207 out of 213 people tested were found to be Covid-19 positive.

The new Jalan Jelawat cluster saw 88 new cases being reported.

There were 13 new Covid-19 clusters classified today of which only one was detected through targeted screening of workplaces.

Notably, there were two clusters involving educational institutions – Hevea Scruciana and Jalan Rasmi.

Covid-19 (March 30): 1,133 new cases, back to four digits

The Health Ministry today reported 1,133 new Covid-19 cases, notably with Penang reporting the second highest number (194). 

Half the new cases in Penang were not from close contacts or clusters, having been detected through “other screenings”. 

According to the Penang Health Department, 124 out of the 194 new cases detected in Penang involved foreigners.

At the national level, Malaysians still made up the bulk of new cases (69.4 percent) and clusters involving detention centres amounted to 7.7 percent of new cases.

As of yesterday, there are six territories which had a R-naught of more than 1 – Kedah, Pahang, Sarawak, Penang, Kelantan and Malacca.

A R-naught of more than one suggests that the spread of Covid-19 was on the rise.

Selangor reported a number of 0.86 while the figure for Kuala Lumpur is 0.94.

Deaths

There were five new Covid-19 deaths reported today, bringing the national death toll to 1,265.

The new deaths were reported in Kuala Lumpur (2), Selangor (1) and Sarawak (2).

Clusters

The Health Ministry reported that there are still 369 active Covid-19 clusters of which 50 saw new cases today.

The cluster with the most new cases is the Penjara Jalan Harapan cluster (73 cases). This cluster – active since November 2020 – originated from the Sungai Buloh prison and has spread nationwide.

The Health Ministry classified another nine new clusters today, of which only only two were from targeted screening of working places.

This would suggest that the new clusters were being spread by those who had no known connection to close contacts or clusters.

Covid-19 (March 29): New cases fall below 1,000

The Health Ministry today reported 941 new Covid-19 cases today.

This is the first time new daily cases had fallen below the 1,000 mark since Dec 9 last year.

Only four territories reported new cases in the triple digits – Selangor (219), Sarawak (192), Johor (171) and Penang (164).

States

Based on the average number of new cases over the past 28 days, the states or territories of Kedah, Kelantan, Malacca, Pahang and Sarawak and experiencing an uptrend in new cases.

New cases in the Klang Valley have been steadily reducing over the past 28 days.

In Selangor, new cases have been below 300 for three days straight, down from 633 average daily cases in the same period last month.

Deaths

The Health Ministry report five deaths, bringing the national Covid-19 death toll to 1,260.

The new deaths were recorded in Selangor (1), Sarawak (2) and Sabah (2).

The victims were aged between 42 and 82. There was one foreigner among the victims.

Clusters

There were 373 active clusters being monitored by the Health Ministry as of today, of which 43 reported new cases.

The number of active clusters have been steadily trending downwards. On Feb 28, there were 491 active clusters. 

Clusters with the most number of new cases are Pagar Bukit Chagar (60 new cases) which is limited to the Johor Baru district and involving a detention centre.

Three new clusters were classified today. Notably, none involved factories or construction sites which are usually a source of new clusters.

Covid-19 (March 28): 1,302 cases; spike in Sarawak – highest on record

The Health Minisry reported 1,302 new cases of Covid-19 today, and four deaths.

The number of new cases outpaced recoveries (1,127), leading to an increase in active cases.

New cases by states

There was a spike in new infections in Sarawak (426), the highest the state has reported since the pandemic began in Malaysia.

The spike was due in part to a surge of infections in a cluster linked to the Semuja immigration depot (191 cases).

This is only the second time cases in Sarawak have exceeded 400 per day, the last being on March 19 (407)

Meanwhile, Selangor continued a downtrend reporting 256 new cases today.

Deaths

There were four fatalities today, bringing the death toll to 1,255.

The new deaths were recorded in Selangor (1), Sarawak (2) and Kedah (1).

Those who died were aged between 63 and 77.

There are 381 active clusters including three new ones today.

Of the active clusters, 60 had new cases today.

Only one cluster – Depot Imigresen Semuja – had triple-digit cases.

Covid-19 (March 27) 1,199 new cases, S’gor has lowest cases since Dec 9

The Health Ministry reported 1,199 new cases of Covid-19 today, and two deaths.

The Klang Valley accounted for 30.69 percent (368 cases) of new infections while East Malaysia made up 27.77 percent (333 cases) of the fresh infections.

New recoveries of 1,257 outpaced fresh cases, helping to reduce the number of active cases.

New cases by states

Selangor reported the lowest number of cases (283) in the state since Dec 9 (277).

Kelantan, meanwhile, reported triple digit case (138) for the first time since Feb 20. This in part due to a new cluster (Gong Kulim) which had 20 new cases today, as well as a rise in cases detected through other forms of screening.

Deaths

There were two fatalities today, bringing the death toll to 1,251.

The new deaths were recorded in Sabah (1) and Penang (1).

Those who died were aged 52 and 60.

Covid-19 (March 26): 1,275 new cases, active cases holding steady

The Health Ministry today reported 1,275 new cases and one death.

While the number of new recoveries outpaces the number of new cases today, the number of active Covid-19 cases has been holding around the 14,500 mark since March 19.

A similar trend was observed in the number of Covid-19 patients requiring intensive care. Over the prior seven days, the average number of ICU patients was 154 and today it was 161.

In Kelantan, the number of new cases has reached 86 and has not been this high in a month.

Deaths

The Health Ministry reported one death in Selangor, bringing the national Covid-19 death toll to 1,243. 

The victim was 74 and had a long list of comorbidities. 

Clusters

There are currently 393 active Covid-19 clusters in the country, down from 509 active cases 30 days ago. 

None of the active cases reported more than 50 new cases today, which is an encouraging sign. 

However, the Health Ministry classified another 13 new Covid-19 clusters today. 

Notably, a new cluster – Taman Brick – is described as a “recreation” in Iskandar Puteri. Those who are infected with Covid-19 are staff of the Iskandar Puteri-based facility.

Incidentally, Khazanah Nasional-owned Legoland Malaysia Resort, located in Iskandar Puteri, posted an announcement two days ago that their facility will be closed as a “precautionary measure” because a “small number” of their contractors and employees tested positive for Covid-19.

Another cluster – Sungai Chat – involved yet another educational institute. As of yesterday, the Health Ministry said there were at least 41 new clusters linked to higher learning institutions, government schools. Islamic schools and preschools.
