Covid-19 (June 18): Daily cases back at 6,000 level

Categories:

COVID-19 | The Health Ministry today reported 6,440 new cases of Covid-19.

This is the first time cases have been over 6,000 since June 11. This is also the second day in a row with rising case numbers.

The number of active cases is currently on a 13-day downtrend while the number of patients requiring intensive care has gone below 900 for the first time since June 6.

According to the Special Committee on Covid-19 Vaccine Supply’s website, 16.28 percent out of an estimated adult population of 23.4 million have received at least one dose of a Covid-19 vaccine.

  • Active cases: 65,602
  • Patients in ICU: 894
  • Intubated: 451

New cases by state

  • Selangor (2,095)
  • Negeri Sembilan (870)
  • Kuala Lumpur (816)
  • Johor (592)
  • Sarawak (536)
  • Perak (357)
  • Malacca (223)
  • Kelantan (200)
  • Sabah (199)
  • Kedah (159)
  • Labuan (152)
  • Penang (122)
  • Pahang (79)
  • Terengganu (32)
  • Putrajaya (6)
  • Perlis (2)

Negeri Sembilan (870) was still reporting a relatively high number of new cases. Yesterday, the Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar Aminuddin Harun said that these new cases were mostly detected through targeted screening on the manufacturing sector.

As of yesterday, the R-naught for the country has reached 0.95. The figure has trended upwards since June 12. This is not a good sign.

A R-naught of less than 1.00 would suggest that the spread of Covid-19 is decelerating – i.e. the lower the value, the faster the rate of deceleration.

On a more micro-level, the only three regions where the R-naught was more than 1.00 are Sabah, Labuan and Negeri Sembilan.

The regions with the lowest R-naught are Kelantan (0.75), Perak (0.76) and Terengganu (0.79).

Deaths

The Health Ministry today reported another 74 deaths attributed to Covid-19. The national cumulative death toll has reached 4,276.

Covid-19 (June 17): 5,738 new cases, surge in N Sembilan

Categories:

The Health Ministry today reported 5,738 new Covid-19 cases amidst a surge in Negeri Sembilan.

The number of Covid-19 patients needing intensive care has finally dropped after increasing non-stop for 43 days.

The number of active Covid-19 cases is on a 12-day downtrend.

As of yesterday, the national registration rate for Covid-19 vaccines stood at 62.53 percent while 15.52 percent out of an estimated adult population of 23.4 million have received their first Covid-19 vaccine dose. The data is obtained from the Special Committee on Covid-19 Vaccine Supply (JKJAV) website.

  • Active cases: 66,097
  • Patients in ICU: 909
  • Intubated: 441

States

  • Selangor (1,858)
  • Negeri Sembilan (1,086)
  • Kuala Lumpur (641)
  • Sarawak (559)
  • Johor (449)
  • Sabah (248)
  • Kedah (197)
  • Malacca (184)
  • Kelantan (154)
  • Penang (97)
  • Labuan (97)
  • Terengganu (77)
  • Pahang (54)
  • Perak (30)
  • Putrajaya (7)
  • Perlis (0)

The new case count for Negeri Sembilan (1,086) today was nearly double of the average reported over the past week.

In a statement, the state’s Menteri Besar Aminuddin Harun said the surge is due to targeted screening being conducted by employers, particularly in the industrial sector in Seremban.

The breakdown of cases today by type of screening in the state is as follows:

– 36 percent from clusters.

  • 78 percent involve industrial sector workers.
  • 13 percent involve special care centres.
  • 9 percent involve community clusters.

– 41 percent from contact tracing.

– 23 percent sporadic.

  • 53 percent from work-related screening and screening of industrial sector workers who have reported symptoms.

In Selangor (1,858), a disturbingly high one in 5.5 individuals tested positive for Covid-19 only after reporting symptoms.

These cases are not linked to existing clusters or are known close contacts thus are termed “sporadic cases” by the authorities.

As of yesterday, the R-naught for the entire country was 0.93. A R-naught of less than 1.00 would suggest that the spread of Covid-19 was decelerating.

The only regions where the R-naught was still more than 1.00 are Sabah, Labuan and Negeri Sembilan.

The regions with the lowest R-naught are Kelantan (0.75), Terengganu (0.76) and Pahang (0.79).

Deaths

Another 60 deaths attributed to Covid-19 were reported by the Health Ministry. The national death toll now stood at 4,202.

Categories:

The Health Ministry today reported another 6,849 new Covid-19 cases have been detected in the past 24-hour period ending noon.

Active cases is continuing on a four-day downtrend but the number of people needing intensive care has reached a new record.

  • Active cases: 78,864
  • Patients in ICUs: 912
  • Intubated: 458

Over the past 24 hours, 99,974 individuals were sampled. This translates to a 6.85 percent positive rate. The World Health Organization recommends that governments aim for a positive rate of less than five percent, by conducting more tests.
