Covid-19 (Oct 29): 6,060 cases

Categories:

COVID-19 | The Health Ministry reported 6,060 new Covid-19 cases today, bringing the cumulative infections to 2,460,809.

The new infections were surpassed by a total of 7,297 Covid-19 patients who recovered today. This is expected to help reduce the number of active cases.

Nationally, the number of hospital admissions in the last seven days has declined by 12.3 percent compared to the preceding week.

However, hospital admissions in some states are on the rise, particularly in Terengganu (+66.7 percent), Pahang (+41 percent), Kedah (+22.7 percent) and Sabah (+11 percent).

  • Patients in ICU: 570
  • Intubated: 300

As of today, the number of Covid-19 patients (including suspected ones) in the intensive care unit (ICU) is 11.4 percent lower compared to a week ago.

Those who require intubation have also declined by 6.2 percent from a week ago.

Beginning Oct 9, the Health Ministry will only publish today’s breakdown of new cases by states after midnight on its CovidNow portal.

The breakdown by states for yesterday (Oct 28), where 6,377 new cases were reported, is as follow:

Selangor (1,431)
Sarawak (676)
Sabah (599)
Johor (575)
Kelantan (527)
Penang (384)
Kedah (362)
Pahang (343)
Perak (297)
Terengganu (293)
Kuala Lumpur (262)
Malacca (253)
Negeri Sembilan (249)
Perlis (83)
Putrajaya (31)
Labuan (12)

Nationally, the R-number for Covid-19 was 0.95 as of yesterday, which indicates the outbreak is still in decline.

However, an R-number of above 1.00 has been reported in Negeri Sembilan, and several other states are borderline on crossing that threshold.

The R-number in Negeri Sembilan is estimated to be 1.04 and comes as the state records its highest case numbers since Sept 13. An R-number above 1.00 indicates an outbreak that is growing and accelerating in pace.

However, it should be noted that the outbreak in the state is still relatively small for now with 249 cases, or 23 cases per 10,000 people.

Meanwhile, the R-number of other states and territories include Kuala Lumpur (0.99), Malacca (0.98), and Putrajaya (0.98).

Due to imprecision in estimating the R-number, however, there is a chance the outbreaks in these places may have actually plateaued or are even growing.

Selangor recorded its highest number of cases since Oct 17, but the outbreak appears to still be in decline for now with an R-number of 0.95.

Clusters

To date, 460 Covid-19 clusters are still active, including 11 new clusters reported today.

The ongoing clusters have fallen by 20.7 percent from the 580 active clusters a week ago.

The 11 new clusters today comprised four workplace clusters (36.4 percent), two higher education clusters (18.2 percent), two non-education ministry institution clusters (18.2 percent), one high-risk group clusters (9.1 percent) and two community clusters (18.2 percent).

All 259 turned out to be Covid-19 variants of concern – 257 of them were the highly infectious Delta variant, and two were the more vaccine-resistant but less infectious Beta variant.

This shows that the Delta variant remains the dominant variant in Malaysia, after outpacing the previously prevalent Beta variant since June.

The sequencing was carried out by a consortium of five research institutes, namely the Institue for Medical Research (IMR), Universiti Malaya’s medical faculty (FOM-UM) and its Tropical Infectious Diseases Research & Education Centre (Tidrec), UiTM’s Integrative Pharmacogenomics Institute (iPromise UiTM), and the Malaysia Genome Institute (MGI).
