Covid-19 (Nov 8): 4,543 cases, uptick in T’ganu hospitalisation

COVID-19 | The Health Ministry today reported 4,543 new Covid-19 cases today, bringing the cumulative infections to 2,510,852.
The fresh infections were surpassed by a total of 7,348 Covid-19 patients who recovered today. This is expected to help reduce the number of active cases.
- Patients in ICU: 534
- Intubated: 263
As of today, the number of Covid-19 patients (including suspected ones) in the intensive care unit (ICU) is 6.2 percent lower compared to a week ago.
Those who require intubation have also declined by 12.6 percent from a week ago.
The R-naught for the country as of yesterday was 0.92. An R-naught of less than 1.00 suggests that the spread of Covid-19 was decelerating.
The only region where the R-naught is more than 1.00 is Putrajaya which recorded 437 new cases over the past 14 days.
Nationally, the number of hospital admissions in the last seven days have declined by 9.5 percent compared to the preceding week.
However, hospital admissions in some states are on the rise, particularly in Negeri Sembilan (+17.2 percent) and Terengganu (+11.9 percent).
Terengganu is the only region in the country which has seen a significant rise in hospitalisation of Covid-19 patients in the past month [see hospitalisation chart below]. This state has the second highest Covid-19 ICU bed usage (79 percent) in the country.
Beginning Oct 9, the Health Ministry will only publish today’s breakdown of new cases by states after midnight on its CovidNow portal.

Covid-19 deaths (Nov 8): 35 reported fatalities, total at 29,291

COVID-19 | The Health Ministry’s Github data repository reported a total of 35 Covid-19 fatalities yesterday (Nov 7), bringing the cumulative death toll to 29,291.
This is the lowest number of reported deaths in 177 days. Nevertheless, Malaysia has the highest number of deaths per capita in the Asean and East Asian regions with 890 deaths per 1 million population, and fourth-worst in Asia after Iran, Lebanon and Jordan – all in the Middle East.
From the newly reported deaths yesterday, 14.3 percent or five died before they could receive treatment at a hospital.
Johor recorded the highest number of new deaths at six, making up 17.1 percent of the newly reported fatalities.
The remaining deaths were in Sarawak (6), Perak (5), Terengganu (5), Kelantan (4), Pahang (4), Penang (2), Sabah (2) and Negeri Sembilan (1).
No new deaths were reported in Kedah, Malacca, Perlis, Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya.
A total of 34 out of the 35 reported deaths or 97.1 percent occurred in the last seven days.
The remaining death occurred more than a week ago but was only recorded yesterday due to delays in data reporting.
An average of 70 Covid-19 deaths was reported daily in the last 30 days compared to the seven-day average of 54, indicating a downtrend.
As of yesterday, there were 64,623 active Covid-19 cases. This is a reduction of 4.9 percent from the 67,969 active infections a week ago.
Compared to 30 days ago, the number of active cases has fallen by 48.7 percent from 125,999.
The Health Ministry’s post-midnight update also provided further insights into the new Covid-19 infections yesterday.
From the 4,343 new cases yesterday, a total of 124 of them could be traced to ongoing Covid-19 clusters.
From the cluster-linked cases, 90 (72.6 percent) were from workplaces while 29 (23.4 percent) were from community transmissions.
Another five (4.0 percent) were from clusters linked to education institutions.
Covid-19 (Nov 7): 4,343 cases, two new clusters in Malacca

COVID-19 | The Health Ministry reported 4,343 new Covid-19 cases today, bringing the cumulative infections to 2,506,309.
The number of fresh infections today is the lowest in 175 days, since May 16.
They comprised 4,126 Malaysians (95 percent) and 217 non-citizens (5 percent).
The fresh infections were surpassed by a total of 5,190 Covid-19 patients who recovered today. This is expected to help reduce the number of active cases.

As of today, the number of Covid-19 patients (including suspected ones) in the intensive care unit (ICU) is 1.4 percent lower compared to a week ago.
Those who require intubation have also declined by 16.6 percent from a week ago.

However, hospital admissions in some states are on the rise, particularly in Negeri Sembilan (+26.3 percent) and Terengganu (+16 percent) in the same period.

COVID-19 | The Health Ministry’s Github data repository reported a total of 54 Covid-19 fatalities yesterday (Nov 6), bringing the cumulative death toll to 29,256.
Malaysia has the highest number of deaths per capita in the Asean and East Asian regions with 889 deaths per 1 million population.
From the newly reported deaths yesterday, 22.2 percent or 12 died before they could receive treatment at a hospital.
Sarawak recorded the highest number of new deaths at 18, making up 33.3 percent of the newly reported fatalities.
The remaining deaths were in Sabah (7), Selangor (7), Pahang (5), Terengganu (4), Johor (3), Kedah (3), Kelantan (3), Perak (2), Malacca (1) and Kuala Lumpur (1).
No new deaths were reported in Negeri Sembilan, Perlis, Penang, Labuan and Putrajaya.
A total of 47 out of the 54 reported deaths or 87 percent happened in the last seven days.
The remaining deaths happened more than a week ago but were only recorded yesterday due to delays in data reporting.
An average of 71 Covid-19 deaths was reported daily in the last 30 days compared to the seven-day average of 54, indicating a downtrend.
As of yesterday, there were 65,505 active Covid-19 cases. This is a reduction of 5.3 percent from the 69,153 active infections a week ago.
Compared to 30 days ago, the number of active cases has fallen by 49.2 percent from 129,050.
Cluster-linked infections
The Health Ministry’s post-midnight update also provided further insights into the new Covid-19 infections yesterday.
From the 4,701 new cases yesterday, a total of 112 of them could be traced to ongoing Covid-19 clusters.
From the cluster-linked cases, 82 (73.2 percent) were from workplaces while 21 (18.8 percent) were from high-risk groups such as old folks homes.
Another nine (8.0 percent) were from clusters linked to education institutions.
Previously, the Health Ministry released death statistics together with the number of new Covid-19 cases in the evening. This had since changed.

COVID-19 | The Health Ministry today reported 4,701 new Covid-19 cases, bringing the cumulative infections to 2,501,966.
The fresh infections today comprised 4,525 Malaysians (96.3 percent) and 176 non-citizens (3.7 percent).
They were surpassed by a total of 5,382 Covid-19 patients who recovered today. This is expected to help reduce the number of active cases.

As of today, the number of Covid-19 patients (including suspected ones) in the intensive care unit (ICU) is 4.6 percent lower compared to a week ago.

From the newly reported deaths yesterday, 25 percent or 16 died before they could receive treatment at a hospital.
Sarawak recorded the highest number of new deaths at 19, making up 29.7 percent of the newly reported fatalities.
The remaining deaths were in Johor (8), Kelantan (7), Perak (6), Selangor (6), Pahang (4), Kedah (3), Sabah (3), Terengganu (3), Penang (2), Kuala Lumpur (2) and Negeri Sembilan (1).
No new deaths were reported in Malacca, Perlis, Labuan and Putrajaya.

Malaysia has the highest number of deaths per capita in the Asean and East Asian regions with 876 deaths per 1 million population.
From the newly reported deaths yesterday, 17.4 percent or eight individuals died before they could receive treatment at a hospital.
Sarawak recorded the highest number of new deaths at 10, making up 21.7 percent of the newly reported fatalities.
The remaining deaths were in Kelantan (9), Johor (8), Sabah (4), Kedah (3), Perlis (3), Malacca (2), Penang (2), Negeri Sembilan (1), Perak (1), Selangor (1), Terengganu (1) and Kuala Lumpur (1).
