Covid-19 (Oct 27): 6,148 cases, R-naught swinging up

COVID-19 | The Health Ministry today reported 6,148 new Covid-19 cases today, bringing the cumulative infections to 2,448,372.

As of yesterday, the R-naught for the country – the formula to measure how contagious Covid-19 is – has reached 0.91, up from 0.86 on Oct 21.

However, as long as the R-naught remains less than 1.00, the figure suggests that the spread of Covid-19 was decelerating.

Notably, Kuala Lumpur and Negeri Sembilan have recorded a R-naught of slightly above 1.00.

Nationally, the number of hospital admissions in the last seven days have declined by 21.3 percent compared to the preceding week.

However, hospital admissions in some states are on the rise, particularly in Terengganu (+36 percent) according to the CovidNow website.

Beginning Oct 9, the Health Ministry will only publish today’s breakdown of new cases by states after midnight on its CovidNow portal.

The breakdown by states for yesterday (Oct 26), where 5,726 new cases were reported, is as follow:

The Health Ministry today announced that there are 563 Covid-19 patients (both confirmed and suspected) receiving intensive care, of which 292 need ventilators.

As of today, the number of Covid-19 patients in the intensive care are15.5 percent lower compared to a week ago.

Those who require intubation have also declined by 11.2 percent from a week ago.

 

 

Clusters

The Health Ministry is currently monitoring 494 active Covid-19 clusters, down 19.5 percent compared to a week ago.

Covid-19 deaths (Oct 27): 84 reported fatalities, total at 28,576

COVID-19 | The Health Ministry’s Github data repository reported a total of 84 Covid-19 fatalities yesterday (Oct 26), bringing the cumulative death toll to 28,576.

Malaysia is the four worst-performing country in East Asia in the number of Covid-19 deaths per capita.

From the newly reported deaths yesterday, 23.8 percent or 20 died before they could receive treatment at a hospital.

Sarawak recorded the highest number of new deaths at 19, making up 22.6 percent of the newly reported fatalities.

The remaining deaths were in Sabah (16), Perak (12), Selangor (8), Johor (7), Terengganu (7), Kedah (6), Kelantan (5), Malacca (1), Pahang (1), Penang (1) and Kuala Lumpur (1).

No new deaths were reported in Negeri Sembilan, Perlis, Labuan and Putrajaya.

 

A total of 67 out of the 84 reported deaths or 79.8 percent happened in the last seven days.

 

The remaining deaths happened more than a week ago but were only recorded yesterday due to delays in data reporting.

An average of 105 Covid-19 deaths were reported daily in the last 30 days compared to the seven-day average of 73, indicating a downtrend.

To date, 2,368 Covid-19 deaths have been reported this month.

A total of 9,680 Covid-19 deaths were reported in September, 7,642 in August, 3,858 in July and 2,380 in June.

As of yesterday, there were 73,258 active Covid-19 cases. This is a reduction of 16.0 percent from the 87,184 active infections a week ago.

Compared to 30 days ago, the number of active cases has fallen by 60.0 percent from 183,290.

Cluster-linked infectons

The Health Ministry’s post-midnight update also provided further insights into the new Covid-19 infections yesterday.

 

From the 5,726 new cases yesterday, a total of 210 of them could be traced to ongoing Covid-19 clusters.

From the cluster-linked cases, 169 (80.5 percent) were from workplaces while 25 (11.9 percent) were from education institutions.

Another 15 (7.1 percent) were from clusters linked to community transmissions.

The remaining cases were traced to clusters related to and high-risk groups such as old folks homes.

Previously, the Health Ministry released deaths statistics together with the number of new Covid-19 cases in the evening. This had since changed.

Deaths statistics are now released after midnight along with other more detailed data. Malaysiakini reports them in the morning.
