Covid-19 (Oct 18): 5,434 cases, lowest since June 28

Categories:

COVID-19 | The Health Ministry reported 5,434 new Covid-19 cases today.

The new case count is the lowest in 112 days, since June 28.

The fresh infections today comprised 5,051 Malaysians (93 percent) and 383 non-citizens (7 percent).

They were surpassed by a total of 8,435 Covid-19 patients who recovered today. This is expected to help reduce the number of active cases.

  • Patients in ICU: 682
  • Intubated: 357

As of today, the number of Covid-19 patients (including suspected ones) in the intensive care unit (ICU) is 9.8 percent lower compared to a week ago.

Those who require intubation have also declined by 10.1 percent from a week ago.

Beginning Oct 9, the Health Ministry will only publish today’s breakdown of new cases by states after midnight on its CovidNow portal.

The breakdown by states for yesterday (Oct 17), where 6,145 new cases were reported, is as follows:

Selangor (1,036)
Johor (732)
Sarawak (730)
Kelantan (572)
Sabah (504)
Perak (461)
Penang (438)
Kedah (370)
Terengganu (319)
Pahang (305)
Negeri Sembilan (214)
Malacca (206)
Kuala Lumpur (182)
Perlis (51)
Putrajaya (22)
Labuan (3)

As of yesterday, the R-naught for Malaysia was 0.88. An R-naught of less than 1.00 is desirable because it suggests the spread of Covid-19 is decelerating.

The only regions where the R-naught is above 1.00 are Negeri Sembilan and Putrajaya.

Clusters

To date, 656 Covid-19 clusters are still active, including 15 new clusters reported today.

The ongoing clusters have fallen by 17.4 percent from the 794 active clusters a week ago.

The 15 new clusters today comprised nine workplace clusters (60.0 percent), two community clusters (13.3 percent), two education institution clusters (13.3 percent), one religious event cluster (6.7 percent) and one high-risk group cluster (6.7 percent).

Categories:

COVID-19 | The Health Ministry’s Github data repository reported a total of 63 Covid-19 fatalities yesterday (Oct 17), bringing the cumulative death toll to 27,921.

This is the lowest number of reported deaths in 105 days. Nevertheless, Malaysia is the worst-performing country in Asia in the number of Covid-19 deaths per capita.

From the newly reported deaths yesterday, 17.5 percent or 11 died before they could receive treatment at a hospital.

Sarawak recorded the highest number of new deaths at 13, making up 20.6 percent of the newly reported fatalities.

The remaining deaths were in Johor (9), Sabah (7), Selangor (6), Perak (5), Kedah (4), Malacca (4), Penang (4), Kuala Lumpur (3), Kelantan (2), Pahang (2), Perlis (2), Negeri Sembilan (1) and Terengganu (1).

No new deaths were reported in Labuan and Putrajaya.

A total of 53 out of the 63 reported deaths or 84.1 percent occurred in the last seven days.

The remaining deaths occurred more than a week ago but were only recorded yesterday due to delays in data reporting.

An average of 173 Covid-19 deaths were reported daily in the last 30 days compared to the seven-day average of 85, indicating a downtrend.

To date, 1,713 Covid-19 deaths have been reported this month.

A total of 9,680 Covid-19 deaths were reported in September, 7,642 in August, 3,858 in July and 2,380 in June.

As of yesterday, there were 92,246 active Covid-19 cases. This is a reduction of 20.9 percent from the 116,596 active infections a week ago.

Compared to 30 days ago, the number of active cases has fallen by 58.3 percent from 221,340.

The Health Ministry’s post-midnight update also provided further insights into the new Covid-19 infections yesterday.

From the 6,145 new cases yesterday, a total of 402 of them could be traced to ongoing Covid-19 clusters.

From the cluster-linked cases, 231 (57.5 percent) were from workplaces while 140 (34.8 percent) were from community transmissions.

Another 14 (3.5 percent) were from clusters linked to education institutions.

The remaining cases were traced to clusters related to high-risk groups such as old folks homes (12 – 3.0 percent) and detention centres (5 – 1.2 percent).

Previously, the Health Ministry released deaths statistics together with the number of new Covid-19 cases in the evening. This has since changed.

Deaths statistics are now released after midnight, along with other more detailed data. Malaysiakini reports them in the morning.
