Covid-19 (Oct 3): 9,066 cases, lowest since July 12

COVID-19 | The Health Ministry today reported 9,066 new Covid-19 cases, bringing cumulative infections to 2,277,565.

The number of fresh infections today is the lowest in 83 days, since July 12 when the number of new cases was 8,574.

 

It is the first time in almost three months that fewer than 10,000 cases were registered.

 

The figures were also the lowest in Johor, Penang, Kelantan, and Perak for around the past two months.

It should be noted that figures for Sunday and Monday might be lower due to slower reporting over the weekend

 

The fresh infections today comprised 8,496 Malaysians (93.7 percent) and 570 non-citizens (6.3 percent).

They were surpassed by a total of 14,454 Covid-19 patients who recovered today. This is expected to help reduce the number of active cases.

 

  • Patients in ICU: 835 (815 confirmed; 20 suspected)
  • Intubated: 535 (355 confirmed; 180 probable)

As of today, the number of Covid-19 patients (including suspected ones) in the intensive care unit (ICU) is 20.6 percent lower compared to a week ago.

Those who require intubation have also declined by 7.8 percent from a week ago.

Peninsular Malaysia made up 6,881 of the new cases or 75.9 percent while East Malaysia contributed to 2,185 of the fresh infections or 24.1 percent.

In Peninsular Malaysia, the Klang Valley was responsible for 1,225 or 17.8 percent of the new infections while the remaining 5,656 cases or 82.2 percent came from outside the Klang Valley.

The ongoing clusters have fallen by 14.9 percent from the 1,185 active clusters a week ago.

The six new clusters today comprised three community clusters (50 percent) and three workplace clusters (50 percent).

Covid-19 deaths (Oct 3): 109 reported fatalities, lowest in two months

COVID-19 | The Health Ministry’s Github data repository reported a total of 109 Covid-19 fatalities yesterday (Oct 2), bringing the cumulative death toll to 26,565.

This is the lowest number of reported deaths in 69 days.

From the newly reported deaths yesterday, 30.3 percent or 33 died before they could receive treatment at a hospital.

Penang recorded the highest number of new deaths at 18, making up 16.5 percent of the newly reported fatalities.

The remaining deaths were in Sabah (13), Selangor (13), Johor (11), Perak (10), Sarawak (9), Terengganu (9), Kedah (8), Kelantan (5), Pahang (4), Kuala Lumpur (4), Perlis (3), Malacca (1), and Negeri Sembilan (1).

No new deaths were reported in Labuan and Putrajaya.

A total of 89 out of the 109 reported deaths or 81.7 percent happened in the last seven days.

 

The remaining deaths happened more than a week ago but were only recorded yesterday due to delays in data reporting.

Compared to an average of 312 Covid-19 deaths in the last 30 days, there was an average of 201 deaths in the last seven days, indicating a downtrend.

As of yesterday, there were 155,823 active Covid-19 cases. This is a reduction of 18.6 percent from the 191,434 active infections a week ago.

Compared to 30 days ago, the number of active cases has fallen by 40.6 percent from 262,543.

The Health Ministry’s post-midnight update also provided further insights into the new Covid-19 infections yesterday.

 

From the 10,915 new cases yesterday, 656 could be traced to ongoing Covid-19 clusters.

From the cluster-linked cases, 380 (57.9 percent) were from workplaces while 194 (29.6 percent) were from community transmissions.

Another 79 (12.0 percent) were from clusters linked to high-risk groups such as old folks’ homes.

The remaining cases (2 – 0.3 percent) were traced to clusters related to detention centres and education institutions (1 – 0.2 percent).

Previously, the Health Ministry released deaths statistics together with the number of new Covid-19 cases in the evening. This had since changed.

Deaths statistics are now released after midnight along with other more detailed data. Malaysiakini reports them in the morning.

COVID-19 | The Health Ministry today reported 10,915 new Covid-19 cases, bringing the cumulative infections to 2,268,499.

The fresh infections today is the lowest in 76 days, since July 18.

In Peninsular Malaysia, the Klang Valley was responsible for 1,583 or 19.8 percent of the new infections while the remaining 6,423 cases or 80.2 percent came from the rest of the peninsular states.

Sarawak topped the chart with 2,121 fresh infections.

However, it is the lowest number of fresh infections for Sarawak in nine days.

The number of recoveries today, 15,396, outpaced that of new cases.
